Inventions of Necessity
In the realm of electric transformers, there are several types that provide specific forms of power conversion for specific applications and purposes. There are high voltage transformers and low voltage transformers. There are also auto, isolation, zig zag, pulse and toroidal transformers, to name a few. The names of these types often imply the functionality and/or intended application of each transformer. Today, I’d like to focus on pulse transformers and some applications for which they are recommended.
Pulse transformers interface a pulse forming network and a load, and they operate in a direct current mode. They are called pulse transformers because they release stored energy in the form of a pulse. They usually work at high frequencies and require low loss cores. A pulse transformer might be used in detail logic and telecommunications operations including radar equipment, camera flashes and particle acceleration. These transformers are also employed in electronic circuit applications and in the digitization of computers. Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation is another technology that requires the use of a conventional pulse transformer. This technology is used to alter the surface properties of aerospace components and the process has very specific operating requirements, which are met most successfully by pulse transformers.
We all know that necessity is the mother of invention. The more our manufacturing processes evolve and grow, the more specialized equipment we need in order to reach our highest potential. There are many kinds of transformers and each performs in a unique fashion which makes them ideal for specific applications.
