They work by way of a couple different designs, depending on the specific application. One is a shell and tube design, which utilizes a series of tubes with hot or cold liquid circulating through them that heat up or cool down a separate liquid that is surrounding them in the larger tube; the large tube, or the shell, houses the series of smaller ones. Although other designs are also utilized, this is the most popular.
