SS Tanks: The Stainless Steel Process
SS Tanks may sound like they are referencing some sort of military weapon or form of transportation, but in fact they refer to stainless steel tanks, the most sanitary and durable style of tanks on the market today, and also the most common in many industries. SS tanks are utilized by chemical processing plants to mix and store liquid chemicals as well as serving as food grade tanks where they process various types of edibles according to FDA regulations.
The regulations set out by the FDA have much to do with a sanitary space that will not infect the substance within the tank with bacteria or disease. This is particularly important in food and beverage processing such as agricultural settings and dairy settings. Stainless steel, which is mainly a combination of steel, chromium and nickel as well as smaller amounts of other alloys, is developed over a span of approximately 10 hours at very high temperatures. When the metals are all combined into the stainless steel substance, the SS alloy is formed into plates or sheets when it is intended for tank construction, usually by a hot rolling or cold rolling process. Directly before this though the stainless steel is annealed by heating and cooling according to precise rules, which removes any stress points in the metal. It is then shaped and welded together into whatever size and shape, although it is usually cylindrical that the industrial SS tank is ordered to be.
SS tanks are welded together because that creates a seamless structure that will not leak and therefore prevents loss of product and financial profit. All of the stainless steel characteristics are present in every SS tank because of the carefully operated process that creates an incredibly durable, leak-proof and sanitary tank to store and transport a variety of substances in safely and efficiently.
