Alignment and Installation
Flexible Shaft Couplings
Shaft couplings are extremely invaluable in protecting machinery from stress, wear, and thus, untimely failure. This is because they often significantly lengthen the working life of the parts they connect. In precision applications, flexible couplings are compensating for three axes of shaft misalignment, while accurately transmitting velocity, position, and torque. Because of their important role, it is crucial that they are selected carefully and installed properly.
Even though the flexible shaft coupler is able to compensate for misalignment, it is imperative to align the shafts as much as possible to ensure that everything will function properly. Different levels of misalignment occur in different assemblies, so the person installing the coupler needs to be aware of these and check each, measuring and adjusting the alignment appropriately. For the best alignments, the shafts should be the same height above the mounting surface and should be parallel to it. To increase engagement between shaft and bore, a shaft-locking compound is often recommended. These will also reduce the likelihood of slippage during operation, which can be very damaging. Using a non-permanent thread-locking compound on all set screws and clamping screws is also recommended.
The key role and life-extending capabilities of shaft couplers makes it very important to ensure that installation is done correctly and with careful attention to angles and alignments of all related parts. Paying attention to all of these details, and using the kinds of products mentioned above will ensure the smoothest operability of the machinery altogether and particularly in relation to the shaft coupler.
