A thermocouple is a small piece of wire made up of two separate metals. Each thermocouple is made of different metals, depending on the use for the heat sensor. The purpose of a thermocouple is to detect the heat of a liquid or solid by measuring the heat output in electrical currents. Different metal combinations can detect the heat levels in different objects. Because of their versatility, thermocouples have use in a variety of industries from oil purifying to popsicle making.

To use a thermocouple, all an operator has to do is connect the two wires to a voltmeter and place the twisted wires on the object that you want to test. Using a complicated math formula, the operator can translate the voltage reading to discover the temperature of the object.

A thermocouple heat sensor is a wise choice for temperature measuring for the following reasons:

Thermocouples have a wide range of temperature sensitivity: Thermocouples can measure temperatures between -250 oC to +3000 oC, which is one of the widest ranges of any temperature sensor.

Thermocouples are inexpensive: Since a thermocouple is simply made up of two wires strung together with a plastic or rubber casing, they are extremely inexpensive to make and use. Different couples can detect different temperatures, and the letter on the side of the couple can indicate what temperature range the thermocouple will measure. Even if you needed one of every kind of thermocouple available, it would still only cost a few dollars to purchase every coupling.

Thermocouples are durable: Wires are flexible, strong, and resistant to corrosion, water damage, rust, and weakening due to excessive use. A thermocouple will last through many uses, even if it is abused and distressed. Even if the unit does eventually break, the low cost of the unit makes it easy to replace.
