Metal and polymer combinations are popular for a number of reasons. First, being able to bond a molten plastic or rubber to a metal, where it will harden around the metallic surface is a much better option then using adhesives later on. When adhesives are involved it causes an additional manufacturing step as well as an additional cost to the production of every product. Also, the plastic or rubber is not able to shape perfectly to the metallic structure, which means there is a greater chance that the adhesive won’t hold and the product will fall apart quickly. Urethane and its multitude of chemically sound characteristics is a perfect example of why bonding metal and plastic together is dynamic.
Polyurethane moulding has become a popular material in recent years. It has numerous architectural applications, and you can often see it showcased in homes with crown moulding, or other architectural flourishes. Polyurethane moulding is also used on the outsides of houses and buildings to enhance the look of building’s exterior. Polyurethane moulding on the outside of a home is usually found under the lip of the roof, and it adds a sense of elegance to the home.
From foam insulation in home construction and packaging to moldings for sprockets and skateboard wheels, polyurethane is extremely versatile as it can be manufactured to varying levels of hardness, stiffness, and density. Polyurethane is known and used widely due to its low tooling cost, resistance to abrasion and extensive wear, its excellent tear strength, color acceptability, elasticity, and solvent resistance. It also operates at minimal noise levels, can be cast, molded, and machined. It can be made sponge-soft or iron hard and can withstand extensive temperature changes. It is this versatility as well as its durability that makes polyurethane such a desirable material in so many industrial applications.
