Poly Bags: About the Plastic Material

Plastic bags are also known as poly bags because of the two types of plastics that are used most often to create them. Polyethylene and polypropylene are not exclusively used to manufacture plastic bags, but because of their specific characteristics they are the most popular. Poly bags must be sturdy but lightweight, able to protect the product within them from moisture, air and a variety of other environmental factors. The thickness and size of the poly bag depends on the application it is intended for, which varies broadly.

Polyethylene bags are waterproof and translucent, ideal for use in commercial and domestic settings. Polyethylene is a thermoplastic that is flexible and tear-resistant, which is part of the reason it is such a great material for plastic bags. According to the specific amounts of chemicals mixed together to create this thermoplastic, polyethylene can have a variety of different textures with corresponding positive and negative characteristics. The same goes for polypropylene bags, the other major poly bag material. Also a thermoplastic, polypropylene has many of the same attractive traits as polyethylene. These include resistance to temperature change, vapor, and moisture and flexibility. In addition, polypropylene is completely transparent, which makes it very useful for applications requiring the product within to be seen.

Other materials are also used to create poly bags, particularly biodegradable plastics that have been developed within the environmentally friendly movement of the last twenty years. Although thermoplastics, which are the most common type of plastic used to make poly bags, are able to be recycled countless times, the idea of biodegradable is attractive to the public as well as individual company’s priorities. However, the needs of the application must come first, so some companies, regardless of how they feel about using biodegradable products, will continue to purchase the best poly bags to protect their products.
