Fluid Powered Rotary Air Cylinders
Rotary air cylinders are air cylinders that move air using a rotary motion. Usually, these air cylinders are powered by pneumatic or hydraulic power. These rotary air cylinders are known as fluid power actuators, because they operate best in fluid-like conditions. Both hydraulic and pneumatic air cylinders use similar principles to operate.
There are two main rotary air cylinder types. The first type is a linear air piston cylinder, while the second type has a rotating vane guiding the air pressure inside the valve.
Linear air piston cylinders: Linear cylinder use a linear piston and gear system to create rotation in the air cylinder. These air piston cylinders are often used in dry applications, and are even used in radios.
Rotating vane cylinders: Rotating vane cylinders have a rotating asymmetrical vane that swings between through a cylinder with two different radii. Since the two sides of the vane are asymmetrical, the pressure on the two sides of the vane creates an unbalanced force, which produces a rotating motion. Vane cylinders have a variety of uses as well, and can often be seen used in liquid applications.
Rotary cylinders are not all beneficial, however. They also have a few issues that makes them inadvisable for certain uses. Rotary cylinders require a larger number of sliding seals than other air cylinder types, which makes them susceptible to leaks. Vane cylinders are more likely to leak than any other type of air cylinder.
You can use rotary cylinders anywhere that rotating power is necessary. The rotating pressure helps in many industrial processes, including the operation of large air core gauges, windshield wipers, opening pipes and process valves, and the opening and closing of gates and dams. The rotating action of the air cylinders makes them ideal for many opening and closing applications.
