The process of EDM, or electrical discharge machining, has been around for a long time and is becoming more popular everyday. EDM got its start in 1770 with an English physicist by the name of Joseph Priestly. Priestly was studying the damaging effect electrical discharge could have on different items that were exposed to it. After his work, not much happened for almost two hundred years until two Russian scientists by the names of Dr. B. R. Lazarenko and Dr. N. I. Lazarenko began to study the same effects. Through their studies they were able to find a way to control the erosion process when dealing with metals. It was thanks to these two that our current method of shaving away metal with sparks in a process submerged in liquid was discovered.
After the Russian scientists’ developments, other researchers were online casino’s also able to add additional contributions to the field of electrical discharge machining. The first machine that was finally created to use the spark machining process was developed in 1952 by the manufacturer Charmilles. Following this, in 1969, the first numerically controlled EDM machine was built. Finally, CNC wire EDM machining was released in 1972. CNC, or computer numeric control, was able to add the precise and exact methods we are able to benefit from today. Using computer programming the whole process can be plugged in to provide accuracy and prevent human error from occurring.
EDM uses electrical energy to cut, drill, etch and machine different metal parts. It is a very accurate and precise method when dealing with different types of metal. Often when trying to shape or change hard metals with other methods they can chip, break, or get rough edges. With this method, the edges always come out perfectly smooth, and mistakes are minimal. It is also a very clean and hygienic way of forming metals, making it great for medical industries as well.
