Corrugated sheet metal is an inexpensive option for roofing and is often used in developing countries and snowy areas. There are three steps in the corrugated sheet metal manufacturing process.
Aluminum alloy sheet metal often comes in 100-meter rolls with a width between 1 and 2 meters. This must be feed into an uncoiled or pay-of reel to be straightened out. A ceiling-mounted crane is often used to move the rolls over to the proper machines. After the curve has been squeezed out of the metal, the sheets are ready to go through cold roll forming. Instead of forming the metal all at once, roll formers will generally bend the corrugated sheet. The collars and troughs of the rollers increase in number and dimensions until the metal has reached the final cross-section shape. After the corrugated sheet metal has been fully formed, it is cut to the correct lengths.
There are a number of benefits to using corrugated sheet metal as roofing. It is lightweight, portable and durable. Even some of the lowest quality corrugated sheet metal can last between 20 to 30 years if cared for properly. The metal is also fire, spark, hail and wind resistant. The material is readily recyclable and an effective as a snow shield. However, without snow guards, snow can slide off the room and potentially injure people. There are also noticeable noises the roof will make in due to movement from differences in temperature. Rusting is inevitable, even when galvanized.
