Titanium: Light Weight but as Strong as Steel

Named after the mythological giants, the Titans, titanium was discovered in the late 1500s. Unlike Tungsten’s superior strength and high density, making it the metal of choice for many tough applications from drill bits and cutting tools to impenetrable tank armor, titanium combines great strength but at low density, making it as strong as steel but half the weight per volume, plus it is ductile, corrosion resistant and heat resistant. The military, automotive, jewelry and aerospace industries, among others, buy titanium products. It’s Not Easy Being Green… Or Is It?

With Earth Day less than a week behind us, the importance of environmentally friendly practices is still fresh in the minds of millions across the country and even around the world. The fervor of this global holiday unfortunately tends to wane as the year goes by. Slowly many slip into the comfort of old habits and relax on earth saving resolutions. This familiar pattern repeats year after year, until now. Now, several industries have made a permanent commitment to going ‘green.’ Studies project that nearly 70% of new jobs in the near future will come from the plethora of manufacturers across the board who are taking advantage of the growing market for green. Roll Forming Corporation and RTI International Metals enter into Long-Term Supply Agreement Estimated at Over $120 Million to Support Boeing 787 Dreamliner Production

Roll Forming Corporation (RFC), Shelbyville, KY, USA – a subsidiary of Voestalpine AG, announced today that it has signed a ten-year agreement with RTI International Metals, Inc. (NYSE:RTI) to supply the laser welding, forming, and inspection of structural titanium components [manufactured by RTI] for The Boeing Company (Boeing) 787 Dreamliner. These components are a major improvement over the previous design in both weight and strength. The contract is estimated to generate in excess of $120 million in revenue over its term which commences in 2009 and runs through 2018. RFC is the exclusive production laser welding supplier for the 787 PAX Floor Pi-Box Seat Track program through its Aerospace facility in Shelbyville, KY. RTI, as lead integrator, along with its multiple supply chain partners, will machine and assemble the finished titanium components used for the seat tracks in the floor structure of the 787. This requirements-based contract extends RFC’s role with RTI and to seat tracks on the 787 program. Continue reading
