Overcoming Abrasiveness

Carbon graphite products can be found in many industries and applications including astronautical engineering, die and mold, aluminum processing, and furnace parts. Graphite is both electrically and thermally conductive, as it has properties of a metal and a semi-metal; and it these qualities that make it ideal in the range of functions that I mentioned. Another ideal quality of graphite is that it is very easy to cut, but it is also quite abrasive and this can cause milling tools to wear rather quickly. The reason for this abrasiveness is the bond strength between carbon molecules. Using diamond coated tools is the best way to cut graphite, as they can last up to 15-20 times longer than uncoated tools. Aside from using diamond cutting tools, there are several ways to ensure that your tools will hold up against graphite’s abrasiveness. Continue reading

Carbon and Life

Carbon, it has the atomic symbol C and is number six on the periodic table. Known for being one of the building blocks of life, carbon is the 15th most abundant element on Earth and the fourth in the universe. It is because of the reputation for being a building block of life that gets scientists especially excited when carbon or graphite-like carbon is found in meteorites or other planets. It is the sign that perhaps life existed at one point in time, that maybe there is more out there than just the mankind of planet Earth. Continue reading

Bearings of All Kinds

Bearings are used in countless products for there use in movement. One particular bearing, the graphite bearing is able to contribute several additional attributes. It is often employed for high temperature applications due to its ability to withstand temperatures of up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also a self lubricator because of its natural greasiness, while many other bearings might require additional lubrication, especially with prolonged use. In many ways, the stability of this product makes it a super material, able to be of use in space, underwater, underground, in gas and vacuum environments. Continue reading

Benefits of Carbon Graphite

Carbon graphite has unique features that make it ideal for a variety of applications and environments in manufacturing industries. When it comes to lubrication, for instance, carbon-graphites out perform traditional oil lubrication. An oil lubricated bearing would struggle at temperatures below -40°C because the oil has a high viscosity, and at temperatures over 200°C oils carbonize and become abrasive. Graphite bearings on the other hand are able to remain effective at temperatures above 600°C. These bearings can perform in both wet and dry conditions, and work well as rotating shaft and faced seal materials as well. Continue reading
