Oxidizers And Green Cars

The number of people looking for more fuel efficient and environmentally safe cars is constantly rising. With gas prices skyrocketing and the threat of global warming waving above our heads, people are finally being forced to take action. People want to save money in gas and help save the environment; it is no longer solely about having the “sweetest” looking and fastest car available. While The Fast and the Furious may always be a dream for many, it is no longer realistic for the majority. Since 1968, when national regulations on emissions became increasingly strict on cars, the industry has been trying to find the most environmentally safe options possible. The method to achieve this cleaner air is oxidizers, and they are being perfected everyday, the resulting in more efficient products. Continue reading

IQS Newsroom Featured Profile: Ultra-Flow, Inc.

In 1992 a technical sales agency under the name of Quality Air Management began serving industry with dust collectors and accessories. It soon became evident that the provision of standard systems was not enough for consumers’ constant demands for the most advanced pollution control equipment to parallel rapidly developing applications. By 2003 QAM changed its name to Ultra-Flow Inc. and changed its focus to the design and manufacture of advanced dust collection systems and innovative accessories previously unavailable. Though successful in its former role, the Ultra-Flow has since become an industry leader in the development of new dust collection equipment. As technology is often revolutionized much faster and with more frequency than many applications can afford, the Ultra-Flow team also retrofits existing systems for improved efficiency and effectiveness. In these ways and more Ultra-Flow has not only grown as a business, but is responsible for much of the growth in the industry at large. Continue reading

A Breath of Fresh Air with Air Pollution Control

Recently, on a trip to the top of the long dormant Teide volcano in the Canary Islands, I noticed something quite remarkable. Standing there, 12,198 feet above sea-level, I was overwhelmed not only by the tremendous view, but even more so by the breath I took of what I am sure is the freshest air ever to fill my lungs. The crisp cool air was almost intoxicating and definitively rejuvenating. Despite my fondness for the clean mountain air I soon returned to Michigan to find the air a bit less miraculous. Especially now, months later as I breathe in the muggy hot air of summer I miss the clear air atop the non-industrialized peak. Here and in much of the world air pollution is reaching alarming levels. Regulatory organizations, however, continue to combat this problem and recreate the clean air of the mountains with various types of air pollution control. Continue reading

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint: Pollution Control Heat Recovery = Environmental Responsibility²

Pollution Control can be very expensive!’ you may say. And you’d be right. It can be. With ever increasing pressure to reduce emissions of gaseous pollution (and a company’s carbon footprint), many are choosing to install fume abatement systems on process exhausts where pollutants are present. In fact, regulations require pollution control equipment for many industries. The popularity of the Thermal Oxidization process for pollution control is, for the time being, high enough that it is considered the norm. Some companies have to endure the cost of cleaning exhausts for the environment. That is the responsibility element companies have to get used to. But it doesn’t have to be all bad news. I would bring to your attention several possibilities of secondary Heat Recovery worthy of your consideration. Process exhaust Heat Recovery can offer exceptional payback. The right industrial-grade air to air heat exchanger, correctly designed, engineered and built for your application, can allow you to reduce negative impact on the environment and your operational energy costs – dramatically. For instance: If you have a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) abatement system you know the final outgoing RTO exhaust temperature is higher than the incoming process air temperature. If, for example, you have 200°F entering the RTO from your process, the RTO exhaust could be as high as 400°F – even higher if the bypass is open. When RTOs are sold with high thermal efficiency expectations, companies often overlook the energy recovery potential of the RTO application. Continue reading

A Brief History of Air Pollution Control, & What We’re Doing to Clean up Our Act!

Since even before the industrial era, humans have been concerned with air pollution control. As early as the beginning of the 1300s in London, smoke pollution was a problem that Edward I recognized by enacting a ban on burning soft coal. However, that policy did not stick, and once the Industrial Revolution began in the late 1700s, air pollutants increased rapidly because of the dramatic shift to machine-based processes. Steam power fuelled by coal was introduced in the First Industrial Revolution of the 18th century and used for factory machinery. Steam-powered transportation became prevalent during the Second Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, with the internal combustion engine and electrical power generation making their appearance at the end that century… Continue reading

Oxidizer Energy Recovery

The mainstream media today is full of allusions to energy awareness and conservation. Just as visible these days are media references to astronomical dollar figures that can boggle the mind. This article does not seek to break out of that mold, but rather to conform to it – as Oxidizer Stack Heat Recovery offers a tremendous opportunity for both energy conservation and energy cost reduction. Consider the following: At any hour of the day there are likely to be more than 10,000 oxidizer systems in service, using a high temperature reaction chamber (with or without catalyst) to treat the exhaust gases from a wide range of industrial processes… Continue reading

Dust Collecting Is More Than Just Sitting Around

Dust collectors perform, in many manufacturing plants, one of the most important steps in material processing; they are vital to worker and equipment safety and can often help recoup thousands of dollars of materials that are lost during manufacturing. So what is it dust collecting systems do exactly? Continue reading
