Tools for Cutting Micro Tubes

Tube cutting is a necessary part of many industrial processes. Many companies specialize in cutting tubes of just one type of metal, such as stainless steel tubes, aluminum tubes, or iron tubes. Other companies provide tubes manufactured in a variety of different metals and plastics. Most tubes are larger than ¼ inch in diameter, but many manufacturing companies also require tubes that are much smaller than that for various uses in machines, tools, and products. Continue reading

Bending to Fit

Have you ever seen a group of builders constructing a house? Then thought to yourself how are they going to finish all of the construction with only straight tubes/pipes for the plumbing? If you have that is a good question because that would be impossible. Tube fabricating is a common element in the customization of plumbing for houses and buildings. There are a couple methods of tube fabrication used in building. With tube fabrication a tube is able to be bent, or shaped into the desired shape needed for construction. Continue reading

Troubleshooting Pipe Bending Equipment

In pipe fabrication, the bend quality of the pipes is extremely important. If the bends are weak or damaged, then the entire integrity of the pipe is compromised. When pipe bend problems occur, it is extremely important to fix the issue as soon as possible. Many factories think that expensive repairs and complicated machine adjustments are necessary to fix these issues, but before you rush to try a complicated solution, there are three simple areas to check that can help resolve the problem without expensive repairs or complicated maintenance procedures. If your pipe fabrication bends are not up to the proper quality, check the following areas before trying any other repair methods: Continue reading

Tubes vs. Pipes

I feel as if the terms “pipes” and “tubes” are often used synonymously. Are the terms really interchangeable or do they both refer to separate parts for different applications? From what I’ve noticed, in the industrial setting at least, there are a few major differences when referring to tubes than referring to pipes. Basically the main difference between the two is tubes are typically used as structural supports whereas pipes are vessels used to transfer fluids and gases. All other differences revolve around this point. Continue reading

The Swagger of Bike Frames

The garage at my house is practically a bike shop. For five roommates we have eight to nine bikes, a moped and a broken down motorcycle. Bikes hang from the ceiling on hooks and the shelves are filled with parts for broken bicycles. The only thing we need to complete our little “shop” is a unicycle and a tandem bike. Continue reading

Create Your Own Tubular Pipe Bells

When I was in high school I joined the school band as a member of the percussion section. I enjoyed the freedom of being in the percussion section. I could walk around in back, and play a number of different instruments as opposed to being contained to one. Most percussionists prefer playing the snare drum and a few the marimbas or xylophone. I however, favored the tubular pipe bells and tympanis. I liked the low boom and ring both instruments produced. Tubular pipe bells have been popularized from the Christmas classic, Carol of the Bells. The vertical bells are also used in the theme of The Exorcist and Futurama. The noise these bells produce sounds similar to church bells. Continue reading

Tube Fabrication: Camping Canopies and Graduation Parties

Tube fabrication is used to make parts for many industrial and commercial goods. Tubes and pipes can be bent, cut and shaped in a variety of ways with a handful of different techniques. Tubes can be bent at common angles between 1 to 90 degrees or more complex angles such as 180 degree bends or U-bends. Some of the products that require common bends include bridges, building facades and canopies. Continue reading

Roll Bars – Not Just a Jeep Thing

When I think of roll bars I instantly think of the go-kart the protagonist in Heavy Weights so desperately wanted to race. These kinds of karts differ from the solo karts found in race tracks and one of the best Nintendo 64 games ever, Mario Kart. Although, since the racers in Mario Kart are constantly rolling over due to banana peels and turtle shells you’d think they would consider investing in a roll cage. Anyways, the go-karts that require roll bars usually have two seats allowing the driver to terrorize a passenger by speeding through the wilderness, hopefully without flipping over and testing the tube bending quality of the roll bars. Continue reading

To Sharpen a Wheeled Cutter

Pipe cutters use strong and sharp wheel blades to get better leverage to slice through pipes made out of PVC, copper, Steel, cast iron and many other materials. The blades are easily sharpened by using a common sharpening stone but one must take precautions in order to prevent getting cut. Tube cutting is a processed used to cut tubes to specific lengths depending on the tube’s application. Continue reading

Tools and Methods of the Pipe Bending Trade

There are many different factors to consider when selecting the right method and corresponding tools to bend pipes. Pipe bending works on straight cylindrical, rectangular or square tubes. The particular tools that should be utilized while bending pipes depends on the size and wall thickness of the tubes as well as the radius of the bend. Common bends include 2-90 degree elbow bends and U-bends such as on a trombone slide. Your budget and quality of bend you’re looking for should also be considered when selecting your bending method. Continue reading
