I Am Joe’s Gas Spring

People who are familiar with Reader’s Digest (or who have read or seen ‘Fight Club’) are likely to be familiar with the ‘I am Joe’s Body’ series that was published in Reader’s Digest some decades ago. It was a novel concept – describing the functions of various organs in first-person in hopes of connecting with audiences who are bored or intimidated by textbook lessons in anatomy. Independent of context, anatomy lessons can be boring or confusing; some of my readings for biology courses in college may as well have been written in Sanskrit. Since I started at IQS last week, I’ve been swimming in an unfiltered sea of extruders, oxidization inhibitors and cross-linked oligomers. If only these parts and services could speak to me, I thought to myself, I might have a chance at understanding what they do. While trying to think of a way to explain how gas springs work, I came across a picture of a gas spring-operated prosthetic: Continue reading

A Day in the Life of Fractional Horsepower Motors

If I asked you what a fractional horsepower motor is, you could probably deduce fairly easily from its name that it is a motor with less than one horsepower’s worth of power. If I asked you to suggest where I could find a fractional horsepower (FHP) motor, it’s possible you would find it a little trickier to come up with an answer. However, the chances are that before you sat down to read this article today, you have already come across and used numerous FHP motors. From the mechanism in an electric toothbrush, to the pump in the coffee machine sitting on the kitchen counter, to the small motors that move the windows and locks in our cars, we are surrounded by fractional horsepower motors in most stages of our lives. These miniature motors keep our refrigerators and washing machines running, and power our windshield wipers and air-conditioning units and office machinery. In truth, we would be hard-pressed to get through the day without them. Continue reading

Electronic Enclosures: The Epidermis of the Technological World

The Bodies Revealed exhibit of real body parts, limbs and organs recently arrived in Grand Rapids, bringing with it an extraordinary three-dimensional look inside the human body and the intricate systems of veins, tendons and bones which make it work. Underneath layers of skin lie the complex skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems that work together to keep our bodies functioning. These fragile systems need protecting from the outside world – from the elements of weather, from contaminants and pollutants, and from tampering with by unqualified persons. Skin is the barrier between our body systems and the outside world in much the same way an electronic enclosure protects an electrical system and its conduits, connections and switches from many of the same concerns. As our skin prevents the elements from access to our veins and tendons, the casing around the wires and connectors ensures that elements of the outside world do not interfere with and damage the electrical circuits contained within. Heavy Duty Riveted Bridge Deck AASHTO H20 Loading and Fatigue Testing: Long Service Life Explored

Heavy Duty Riveted Bridge Deck Grating has been field proven to provide long service life for heavily loaded bridges. Examples presented include riveted steel decks that are in almost new condition after over 15 years in service and others that are still in good condition after nearly 60 years of service with no evidence of significant damage or deterioration. This is in stark contrast to the service life exhibited by some welded type bridge decks. This paper begins to examine the fatigue resistance of heavy duty riveted style bridge decks. The results from static load and fatigue cycle testing of riveted grating under AASHTO H20 loading with a 30% impact factor are presented. The testing conducted during 2009 and 2010 at the University of Akron Civil Engineering Lab has examined the static behavior of the riveted grating and has included fatigue testing of full-scale decks to well over 1 million cycles. The extra heavy load levels and worst case load location were used to accelerate the testing, and show where cracks might originate. The results also provide insight into the best methods for attachment of the riveted grating to the support structure. Continue reading

Electroless Nickel Plating and More to Get the Right Reaction

With news of a princely engagement across the pond intertwined with Black Friday deals extending to the jewelry market, those without a family jewel to bequeath to their darling might be looking for a deal that will, like the media frenzy, combine the right price with a charmed reaction from that special someone. Even with the deals, though, some might find the solid gold or silver jewelry out of their price range. Luckily, gold and silver coatings applied to a more economic substrate through electroless plating offer a lovely alternative that still gets the right reaction. Coincidentally, getting the reaction right is the key to success when it comes to gold and silver plating just as it is with the more common electroless nickel plating. Continue reading

IQS Newsroom Featured Profile: Superbolt, Inc.

In 1974, Rolf Steinbock, then President of Steinbock Machinery Corporation, noticed a problem with the bolts of scrap choppers he was working with. He had an idea for a simple solution which, when implemented, saved valuable time and material by reducing the wear and tear on the machinery. Steinbock continued to use this new bolting device, and years later when he further improved the design, the multi-jackbolt tensioner was created. The success of this product, later patented by Steinbock, led to the start of a company based on manufacturing quality bolts. Starting business in a small rented space with just three employees, Superbolt, Inc. was born. Built upon Steinbock’s simple premise of problem solving and continuous improvement, Superbolt has continued to advance from its humble beginnings. Today, it is one of the fastest growing providers of bolting solutions in the world, with the US-based plant shipping approximately 100,000 individual tensioners a year. Continue reading
